Information for the Weeks of November 20th-December 1st

Curriculum News

This week’s newsletter will actually cover the weeks of November 20th-21st as well as November 27th-December 1st.  There would be little to report on our very short week before our Thanksgiving break.  During those 2 days we will be busy with numerous activities and learning opportunities that revolve around the topic of Thanksgiving.  While there is NOT a spelling test that very short week, we will be practicing some Thanksgiving words during our “Word Work” time and will also be looking at several stories that will get students prepared and excited for this very special holiday.  We will also skip our Reading Logs for the Thanksgiving holiday.  We want everyone to enjoy their families during this time!

After Thanksgiving we will resume a regular schedule and kick things off with a closer look at the novel-Charlotte’s Web during our Reading/Literacy Block time.  This will tie in nicely with our study of bridges because this book does an excellent job of showing how we can “build bridges among unlikely friends”, which is the theme for our Reading unit for the next couple of weeks.  In Math, we will be working with various types of graphs which will help students better understand how to display important information and how to use graphs to answer a variety of questions.  Our study of the 7 continents will continue as we explore the vast continent of Asia and take a closer look at the fascinating country of China.  Students are doing very well with their map assignments and are enjoying the opportunity to take a look at a variety of cultures from around the world!
