Week of Mar. 3rd-6th

Classroom/Curriculum News

As we wrapped up our official study of money, we spent some time doing a variety of games and activities involving this very important skill.  We will still be revisiting this topic from time to time and I strongly encourage you to continue to work on this with your child at home with any spare change that you can find!  This is a skill that will be needed for the rest of their life!  Now our math studies will lead us in the direction of adding and subtracting money amounts and estimating!  There are still so many important topics to cover!

Our literacy time will still focus on folktales but will allow us to focus our attention on this particular genre from various places around the world.  This will give us some more insight to a variety of cultures and places in each of our 7 continents!

Counting $ Website

During our Math time this week, we have been doing centers to help review counting money.  One area that groups have gone to is “Computers”.  During this time, they have been using the website given below as a link to several websites that allow students the opportunity to count money!  I thought that I would share this with everyone in case your child wanted to spend some extra time at home covering this skill!

Thank you!!!

Week of Feb. 23rd-27th

Curriculum

This next week  we will be continuing with our theme of folktales around the world.  We will compare different versions of the same tale which will allow us to put our own creativity to work by writing our very own version of a popular folktale/fairy tale.  We will also be looking at using prefixes and suffixes on words and how it changes their meaning.  During our Math time we will be wrapping up our unit on money by working on adding and subtracting different amounts of money.  We will also get into estimating a bit more.  Money will definitely be revisited throughout the school year.  If you have any extra opportunities at home to allow your child to count your change that will only solidify and help them retain this very important skill.  During our time in Science, we will begin discussing weather which is always a fun and exciting topic to learn about!

Week of Feb. 16th-20th

Curriculum News

This past week was fun as we studied the topic of chocolate and how it is made.  We were also able to continue our discussion of the 7 Continents by learning a bit about the “Land Down Under”-Australia.  This next week we will wrap up the continents as we look at the cold and desolate continent of Antarctica.  We will also be working on writing a paragraph about our favorite food and explain why we have picked that particular plate as our favorite.  During Math we will be continuing our study of counting money and get more time practicing this very important skill!  During our literacy time we will start to take a look at fables and folktales from around the world.  So much to study with so little time!

Week of Feb. 9th-13th

Curriculum News

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought that we could shift our focus during our literacy time away from our discussion of a “Journey to Freedom” to that of chocolate!  Why not……that is one of the reasons why we all love Valentine’s Day anyways!  During this time we will be learning about “making predictions”, “making inferences”, and several other important skill sets all while learning about chocolate and reading a fun chapter book called “Chocolate Fever”.  It will be a fun and interesting week to say the least!

Also, our official study of counting money will begin.  There was a note sent home on Thursday, Feb. 5th asking for your help by sending a few coins with your child to school so that we can practice using some real coins!  Please try to send that on Monday or Tuesday of this week!  I am also asking for your help with assembling some Valentine Card boxes.  If each child could have a small (cereal, shoe, or tissue) box here by Tuesday, February 11th that would greatly help!  Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!
