Curriculum News & Information

It is so hard to believe that we are in the last week of our 2017-2018 school year.  I do not know where the past nine months have gone.  During our final week we will be taking a look at some fun summertime stories to get kids ready for their break.  This will allow us to talk a bit about summertime safety tips.  Students will also be writing a bit about their summer plans and activities that they are looking forward to participating in over the next several months.  I do strongly encourage all students to keep up with their reading through the summer…..even if it is 5 minutes a day.  We want students to start off strong when they return in August and I do expect great things from this group!  They are a group of very strong readers!  I will continue to keep the website RAZ Kids open for this class to use throughout the summer.  They know how to log on and are familiar with how it works.  Please also encourage them to practice their math facts as many are still struggling with the memorization of the basic addition/subtraction facts.  This will only help ensure success in the following year of school!

Obviously there will be no spelling test during our last week of school.  We will also be done with our assignment books.  Each day next week we will probably be sending some things home so please bring book bags each day next week!

I also want to thank all of the parents for helping encourage and push your students to be the best that they can be.  It has truly been a pleasure having this wonderful group of second grade students!  As I said before, I do see this group doing some amazing things in the future!  Hope everyone has a safe and wonderful summer break!

Curriculum News

During our Reading/Literacy time we will be taking a look at a series of books by a wonderful children’s author , Kate DiCamillo.  We will especially focus on the Mercy Watson series and get to know this curious pig character a bit better.  We will also be focusing on some of the writing projects which we will be wrapping up as we embark on our last “regular” week of school.  Some of our time will also be spent learning how to enhance our writing skills to help prepare students for their future studies and work.  The last week of school will be filled with early outs and some fun activities as the school year comes to a close so we need to squeeze in as much learning and review as possible during this upcoming week!

Students have worked very hard this year but we will still be spending time reviewing some of the important and necessary skills that need to be retained in the years to come.  One of them will be telling time as this is one that will be necessary throughout their lives.  We will also be continuing with our study of US History as we review some important dates and events in our country.  We will also be reviewing some of the important things that were learned on our field trip which included lessons on native birds and plant life.

Curriculum News

We will be continuing with our study of “Taking Care of Ourselves” as we look at a variety of stories that focus on healthy habits along with healthy food choices.  Students have gotten numerous opportunities to learn and discuss some of these topics but will look at several different types of stories that also incorporate some other ideas for ways that we can take good care of ourselves throughout the year.

Our final benchmark tests and Lei Day have slightly slowed down our progress in Science, so we will be continuing with our topics of weather and our solar system.  During our Social Studies time we will be looking a bit more into our country’s history, which will help us better understand and appreciate how far we have come through the years.  During our Math time we will be continuing to review some of the necessary skills that student have learned throughout the school year as we work to prepare them for third grade!

On Friday, May 11th , 2nd grade, 1st grade, and Kindergarten students will all get the opportunity to visit the Abraham Lincoln Memorial Gardens in Springfield.  We will be hoping and praying for good weather that day as we explore what sounds like a beautiful space and will be learning a bit more about our own surroundings here in Illinois.  There will be a note going home with more details, however, we will be leaving at 8:45 and should be returning at around 2:00-2:15 that afternoon.  We look forward to a fantastic day!!!
