Weeks of November 21st-Dec 2nd

This blog will cover 2 weeks of information because of the extremely short week which is coming up!

Curriculum News & Information

With the very short week that we have next week, we will NOT be having a spelling test.  The words which are given below are words for the week of November 28th-December 2nd.    During our two and a half days next week, we will be taking a closer look at the history behind our beloved Thanksgiving holiday.  This will include some stories which we will look at during our Literacy block, as well as several lessons in the afternoon during our usual Social Studies time.  This will hopefully help students become more aware and appreciative of why this day is so special in our country.  Starting in December we will turn our attention in Social Studies towards the study of the 7 Continents.  Students always enjoy this as we get the opportunity to learn a bit about this amazing world that we live in! In Math, we will continue to work on telling time.  Students are doing very well with the basics, but will soon be challenged a bit more as we look at telling time in both 5 minute and 1 minute increments.

After Thanksgiving Break we will continue with our unit on the Wild West by taking a look at some famous artists who have focused on scenes of the Wild West.  We will also take a look at the significance of The Pony Express in the history of our nation as we wrap up the study of this era in America’s History.  During our Science time, we will be starting to take a look at our Earth’s Surface, beginning with the importance and many uses of both plants and water which are both vital to Earth’s continued existence.  Our work with cursive handwriting will also continue, as students are adding more and more cursive letters to their repertoire!

Week of November 14th-18th

Curriculum News & Information

It seems that as the school year goes by, each month passes faster and faster!  Students have been learning a lot about the “Wild West” and what it would have been like to live in the time of our early settlers.  While exploring this time in America’s history, we have also been looking at numerous types of writings which have allowed them to explore this topic in even greater depth.  This week we will continue this study by looking at a Magic Tree House book which has characters stepping back in time , seeing first-hand what life was like in the towns of the Wild West.  Students always enjoy these entertaining books!  This will also give us the opportunity to work on a new style of writing- writing newspaper articles.  They will see several examples and get the opportunity to work on writing articles that go along with this story!

During our Science time we will get the chance to take a look at the many changes in our habitat and how pollution is negatively affecting all living things.  We will continue to work on some map skills as we prepare to study the 7 Continents of the World.  Telling time will continue to be our main focus in Math.  We will be practicing telling time up to 5 minute intervals.  This is always a challenging concept but is a necessary skill to have mastered as students prepare for the real world!

This past week we have started to take a look at writing in cursive.  So far we have talked about the major types of strokes used in cursive writing and our first 2 lower case letters-l and h.  Keep practicing those letters second grade!

Week of November 7th-11th

Curriculum News & Information

There is still so much material to cover as we continue our exploration of the “Wild West”.   This next week we will get the opportunity to study some of the great poets who have written poems about this time in America’s history and will also take a look at few of the popular songs written during this time period.  Our writing time will be spent discussing interviews and how they are completed and written up.  Students will be coming home with a sheet which will give them an opportunity to hopefully find out a bit more about some of their grandparents.  This should be coming home mid-week.  We will also spend some of our writing time exploring writing better sentences as we prepare to write our own short stories in 2nd grade.  During our Math time we will be starting our unit on telling time.  This is such an important and necessary skill that I will ask for you to help sneak in some extra practice at home whenever possible.  This should be starting by the end of the week!  In Science we will be taking a look at how animals help plants survive and discuss several examples of some food chains found in our environment.

While we did not get the opportunity to work on cursive this past week, we will be diving into our cursive books this next week.  We will start with some of the lower case letters before moving on to upper case.  I know that the students will look forward to that and I am anticipating some excellent cursive writers in this class!

Reminders

This next week will also be quite busy.  We will be having a Veteran’s Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 9th in the Emden Gym at 1:00 PM.  The third and fifth grade students have been preparing for this for some time and it is always the perfect way to honor those brave men and women who have served!  There is also no school on Friday, November 11th in honor of Veteran’s Day!

Have a great weekend!
