Week of April 3rd-7th

Curriculum News & Information

During our Reading/Literacy block, we will be spending time reviewing some of the things which we have learned throughout our Hand-Me-Down-Tales From Around the World Unit.  Students will also be creating concept maps using some single concept books that will be available in class.  They will also get the opportunity to compare and contrast various homes from around the world and a variety of breads that are baked and enjoyed in a number of different locations.  During our focus on writing time, we will be practicing some of our previously learned writing skills such as super sentences to help enhance our daily work.  Students will also take a look at various types of writing styles as we practice writing similes in class, all the while preparing them for the next step in their education….third grade!

Math will lead us in the direction of studying place value up to the one thousand.  This will also give us the opportunity to work on things such as comparing numbers and writing and saying numbers various ways.  During Social Studies we will still be taking a look at numerous map skills and getting second graders familiar with important sites within this amazing country that we call home!  There is still so much to learn and explore in second grade!

Week of March 27th-31st

Curriculum News & Information

During our Reading/Literacy block, we will be taking a look at some very famous poems written by Robert Louis Stevenson.  We will also be working with some key Reading skills such as cause and effect as well as main idea.  All of these things will only help students become more aware of writing styles and help them notice story structure in greater detail.  Our work in the area of writing will focus on writing couplets and similes which give students another tool to help them become stronger in the area of writing.  Math will continue to take us in the direction of measurement, focusing even more on measuring weight and the capacity of things.  Skills such as this will only help prepare them for real life scenarios that require us to understand how to measure things in a variety of ways.

Our trip to the Lincoln Hospital was a lot of fun and most importantly very informative for students.  They were able to see areas of the hospital that few people get to see.  One opportunity allowed them to see the lab where scientists take a look at specimens which help them diagnose patient.  This will definitely lead us into numerous discussions about scientists and the many different jobs that they hold in our communities.  Ask your child what they enjoyed most.  You might be surprised by some of the things that they remembered from our fun trip to the hospital!

Curriculum News & Information

During our Reading/Literacy block, we will continue our work with folk tales.  This week, however, we will be taking a closer look at a number of versions of a very popular folktale and compare how they are all the same and yet different.  Our writing will continue to focus on using the correct pronouns and plural forms of nouns within our creative writing assignments.  In cursive, students will continue with some upper case letters and will get more opportunities to write entire sentences in cursive.  This is something that needs to be comfortable for them by the time they reach third grade.  Keep practicing those letters!

In Science, we will continue to take a look at what causes a variety of weather patterns.  During Social Studies we will be studying a variety of maps which will help us better understand the geography of our nation and how we navigate around this vast, beautiful land!
