Week of November 30th- December 4th

Hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and extended weekend!  Now we have only 3 more weeks in the first semester of school….how is this even possible?  While we have already explored numerous fascinating topics and learned too many things to count, we still have so far to go!  Next week we will be taking a look at “Unlikely Friends” as we read and discuss the chapter book/novel Charlotte’s Web.  This will last for a few weeks as we compare and contrast characters and take a closer look at story elements.  As we continue to work on and develop our writing skills, we will spend some time understanding adverbs and how they make our reading and writing much more interesting!  And yet in another area of writing, we will be continuing to work on some more lower case cursive letters.  This class is already showing me some very neat handwriting as we have already learned 6 new letters!

During our Math time, we will continue to look at adding 2 digit numbers without regrouping numbers.  We will also take a look at predicting patterns with numbers which are given in the form of charts.  Students are also making great gains with those addition facts.  One student has almost made it completely through the addition “Rocket Math” program and is heading towards the subtraction portion!  Keep it up 2nd grade!  Everyone can do this!

Our C.A.T.C.H program or school-wide program promoting making healthy eating choices and encouraging more exercise made its “official” debut this past week.  With this comes more lessons and discussions about how to make healthier eating choices and how to read food labels (looked at this coming week).  Students already have a very good understanding about which foods are “GO, SLOW, and WHOA” foods.  Ask them to explain and give you some more details!  This week we will look at better understanding why some of these “WHOA” foods are so bad for your body!  These are some very important lessons for them to learn!

Week of November 23rd-25th

Curriculum News

With this next week being a very short week, our time will be very limited.  During our Reading/Literacy Block time, we will be turning our attention towards the Thanksgiving holiday and looking more closely at some fun stories that talk about this fun and special time of year.  We will be continuing to work on writing paragraphs about some of our own special Thanksgiving Traditions.  Keep reading, even over break, because spending more time reading is the absolute best way to continue to grow as readers!  During our Math time, we will be starting to look at adding 2-digit numbers and doing some fun “Thanksgiving Math Story Problems”.  We will also be continuing to work on some of our lower case cursive letters.  Students are doing a fantastic job getting these cursive strokes down!  Keep it up second grade!

*There will NOT be a spelling test this next week because of the extremely short week.  We will be practicing some “festive” Turkey Day words during our Word Work time instead!  Enjoy the week off from studying Spelling!

Announcements/ Reminders

There will be an early dismissal at 11:30 on Wednesday, November 25th.  On that day there will be some very special festivities for Grandparents to take part in beginning at 8:45.  Students have been practicing and preparing for a few weeks now and are always so excited to have the opportunity to show their grandparents around their school!  We have been looking forward to that day for some time now.  It will not last too long but will conclude with some refreshments and an opportunity to visit with the children before it is over.  There is also no school on Thursday and Friday of next week so that we are able to enjoy some very important time with our families!  I am so thankful to have your children in my class this year and hope that everyone has a very blessed Thanksgiving!

Curriculum News

Students have really enjoyed studying bridges and taking a look at several examples of stories or literature that explore this topic.  During this upcoming week we will take an even closer look at the different types of bridges and look at some narrative fiction and nonfiction books that include the topic of bridges.  During our writing time we will be working on some fun Thanksgiving poems that will help prepare us for this quickly approaching holiday!

During our Math time, we will looking at how to use data from charts as well as beginning the process of adding 2-digit numbers.   As we wrap up our discussion of animal classifications during Science, we will be turning our attention to the study of animal habitats and adaptations.  Also, we will be officially be kicking off our C.A.T.C.H. program which promotes healthy choices for everyone.  Oh….and how can I forget our continued study of lower case cursive letters.  This class is doing amazing with their very first attempt at writing cursive letters.  It may take some patience and hard work but before the end of the school year we hope to be writing some of our work in cursive!

Next week should be a pretty regular week for us.  There are not any early outs or days off, which means that we will have a bit more time to focus on our academic goals!  Hooray!  Remember that Reading Journals are due on Mondays and that if they get lost, just send me a note telling me how many minutes were read and with a signature for proof of time completed!  Thank you!
