Week of April 29th-May 3rd

Curriculum News

During our next week of class, we will be working on a lot of important and fun things!  In Math, we will be wrapping up our work with adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers.  Then we will be moving onto the discussion of shapes, geometry, and fractions.  For Reading we will be spending some time focusing on our concept books.  Students have begun their work on their very own concept book that will be shared with some of our younger students once they are all finished.  During our Social Studies time we will be focusing on different types of landforms and taking a look at some other topics within the area of Geography.

Upcoming Events

On Wednesday, May 1st we will be celebrating Lei Day in our second grade classroom.  This is a real holiday in the state of Hawaii and we will be spending the day learning as much as we can about our 50th state all while covering some important skills.  We will still be doing work but it will be tied in with our study of Hawaii.  We do get out early that day (11:30) and may need to continue with our work on May 2nd.  On Wednesday, May 1st I do ask that students try to dress in tropical style clothing.  It could just be as simple as wearing some bright, cheerful colors!  It will definitely be a fun and educational day and a half!

Weeks of April 15th-18th & April 23rd-26th

Curriculum News

This newsletter will include the upcoming two weeks because of 2 shorter weeks in a row.  During the week of April 15th-17th, we will be taking a look at some fun springtime stories that tie in with our discussion of fairytales.  This will also lead us into some fun Easter themed writing activities that will give students the opportunity to share some of their fun family traditions.  When we return from Easter break, we will be turning our attention to concept books.  This will allow us to take a closer look at text features found in this particular genre and will lead to our 2nd graders getting to write their own concept book on a topic of their choice.  After our time off we will also be spending a lot of time focusing on ways to take care of the Earth since we will be celebrating Earth Day all week long!

Upcoming Events

Our Jump Rope for Heart event is coming up on Wednesday, April 17th and will go from 12:00-2:00 in the gym with K, 1, and 2 doing their activities in the gym first with the older grades getting a turn following that.  This is always such a worthwhile cause and is also a good way to get in some extra exercise that will only help strengthen our own hearts.  Also, our K, 1, and 2 annual field trip is quickly approaching.  It will be on Tuesday, May 7th.  We will be leaving first thing in the morning and return at approximately 2:15-2:30 on that day.

Week of April 8th-12th

Curriculum News

This week we will continue to look at some folktales and fairytales.  At the beginning of the week we will focus our attention on the folktale Peter and the Wolf.  Students will continue to review the elements of a story while they look at how authors sometimes use things other than words or pictures to represent certain characters in stories.

During our Science time we will continue to focus on our home planet-Earth.  We will take a closer look at the water cycle and ways we can help protect our planet.  We will also focus a bit more on some of the resources that people use from our environment.  This will give students the opportunity to better understand the difference between natural resources and those that are man-made.

Upcoming Events

On Thursday, April 11th our class will be visiting our local hospital in Lincoln.  This event is put on every year by some amazing volunteers who hope to give 2nd grade students in Logan County a better understanding of how our local hospital operates.  This experience is also helpful in that it gives young children a chance to visit the hospital and hopefully leave with a more positive feeling about this very important part of our community.  Students always have an amazing time and should return with some fun stories to share!  Departure time and our return time is given below!
