Week of October 31st-Nov 4th

Curriculum News & Information

During our morning literacy time, we will continue our work with the Wild West.  This week, however, we will turn our attention to fairy tales that have been altered by simply changing the setting to the Wild West.  As we continue to take a look at different types of writing, we will also be looking at the 4 different types of sentences that good writers use when composing a story.  We will be wrapping up our work with 2-digit subtraction, which will be revisited later in the school year.  Following that, we will be working on comparing numbers up to 100.  Our Science time will give us the opportunity to learn a bit about animal classifications and life cycles.  Students will be able to understand the difference between amphibians, mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish and see examples of the life cycle of fish and birds.

Students will be starting to learn a few basic lower case cursive letters this week as well as we begin our exploration of writing in cursive.  This can sometimes be challenging but is still something that needs to be learned and practiced as much as possible.  As this begins, I encourage you to have your child practice some of the letters at home as well!

Week of October 24th-28th

Curriculum News & Information

During our morning literacy time, we will begin our Wild West Unit.  It will start out with our exploration of tall tales as we look at some examples of some American Tall Tales about Paul Bunyan and John Henry.  Both are American classics and will allow us to look at the 4 characteristics of this particular type of story.  Our Language Arts/Writing time will be spent working on adjectives and using more in our own writing to help enhance our work.  We will also be working on writing book reviews so that other second grade readers might get the opportunity to see what their peers are saying about some of the fascinating books in our classroom library.

Second graders will also be able to learn a bit more about the geography of our beautiful nation during our Social Studies time as we learn how to identify some of its many landforms and bodies of water.  Hopefully this will help them have a better appreciation for beauty of our land and why we are so lucky to live in this amazing country!

Our upcoming C.A.T.C.H. curriculum lesson will focus on the differences between natural and added sugars in the foods that we eat.  Students will see examples of foods that have too much added sugars and will hopefully be able to make better choices when it comes to both snacks and meals.

Reminders

There are no additional activities on the calendar for this week.  I will remind you, however, that we will be having a Halloween Day Parade (weather permitting) on Monday the 31st  at 1:00 PM.  If it rains, students will parade around the gym several times.  Following the parade, parties are in classrooms for most of the afternoon!  Students may wear their costumes to school that day as long as it is not too distracting to them during the school day.  If you do not want your child to wear them to school, we will allow time for them to change or add things to their costume before the parade.

Week of October 17th-21st

Curriculum News & Information

During our morning literacy time, we will continue our unit on Music Appreciation.  We will also get the opportunity to use books which will help us become more familiar with orchestral music.  Because of all of the extra things that took place last week, we are still working with subtracting 2-digit numbers in math.  By the end of the week,  we will take some time to understand the challenging concept of regrouping when subtracting 2-digit numbers.

During our Science time we will continue to take a look at the different layers or zones of the ocean.  Along with this, we will also be able to explore some of the other diverse habitats found on planet Earth.  As we continue to explore some of the very important topics covered in Social Studies, we will take a closer look at the basics of maps which will help students better understand the world around them.  Then we will move on to the topic of natural resources found in our environment.  There are always so many new and fascinating topics to cover!  All of this is a continuation from last week because we were very busy with some important activities such as Fire Safety and National Bully Prevention Week!

During our morning literacy time, we will continue to take a look at a variety of styles of poetry and students will get the opportunity to write some of their very own!  We will also begin our unit on Music Appreciation at this time, as we use books to help us become more familiar with orchestral music.  As we continue to work with 2-digit numbers in math, we will take some time to understand the challenging concept of regrouping when subtracting 2-digit numbers.  This might take several days but I am certain that this group will catch on and do well with this difficult concept.

During our Science time we will continue to take a look at the different layers or zones of the ocean.  Students will also get the opportunity to learn a bit more about some of the fascinating animals found in this vast habitat as students share their Ocean Animal Posters with the entire class!  Thank you for your help and support with this endeavor.  We will not have too many bigger assignments like this!   As we continue to explore some of the very important topics covered in Social Studies, we will take a closer look at the basics of maps which will help students better understand the world around them.  Then we will move on to the topic of natural resources found in our environment.  There are always so many new and fascinating topics to cover!
