Week of April 4th-8th

Curriculum News

This week, during our literacy block, we will be taking a look at concept books and will use them to compare and contrast things that we see in our everyday world.  This will allow us to not only learn new and valuable information about these things but also give us the opportunity to create our very own concept book about something of interest.  During our Math time we will be working with various types of graphs so that we better understand the data or information that is presented to us when we are looking at a graph.  As we move on through a variety of important topics within our Social Studies books, we will take a look at the very important terms of- income, goods, and services.  They will get the opportunity to learn that people can make choices about earning, spending, and saving money.  In Science we will be continuing to explore the various systems of the body so that we can make better informed decisions about living a healthy lifestyle that will keep us strong and alert both here and at home.  Our writing time will be mostly spent developing our concept books but we will also discuss and get some practice with using apostrophes in different types of writing.  This should be a very busy but fun week!  It is hard to believe that there are only 7 weeks left of school!  This is the time of year when students tend to start thinking about summer but remember everyone, there are still so many exciting new things to learn about before you leave 2nd grade!  Let’s stay FOCUSED!

Weeks of March 21st-April 1st

Curriculum News

This blog will actually cover things for the next two weeks.  The week of March 21st-23rd is shorter because of our spring break so I decided to include information and news for the following week and a half of school.  During our short, 3-day week, we will be taking a look at some fun Easter/Spring stories as we continue to work on numerous phonetic and writing skills.  When we return on Tuesday, March 29th, we will be taking a quick look at some Kevin Henkes books as we study his unique writing style.  Our writing over the next several weeks will focus on Writing Personal Stories with Meaning and significance.  For Math, we will be continuing to talk a bit about measurement as we discuss topics like perimeter and area of shapes.  We will also be talking about a variety of measurement tools for measuring things such as long distances or liquids.  This will then lead us into an introduction of a variety of types of graphs.  During our time in Science, we will be continuing with our discussion of Body Systems.  Thus far we have taken a closer look at our Nervous System and Respiratory System.  This gives us the opportunity to discuss ways to take care of these important systems in our body.  In Social Studies we are still taking a closer look at our environment and natural resources.  As always, there is so much to cover in just a small amount of time!

Week of March 14th-18th

Curriculum News

As we wrap up our unit about folktales from around the world, we will get the opportunity to look at some that are possibly new to students as well as some that are classics.  One of these folktales will be the classic one known as,  Peter and the Wolf.  This will allow us to explore a variety of topics that also pertain to music which is always fun to learn more about!  During our Math time, we will discuss the important topics of estimating and as well as some key concepts in geometry, such as area and perimeter.  It is also important to remember to keep working on those basic math facts.  Second grade students should know all addition and subtraction facts by heart before entering third grade and it is necessary to carry over this practice at home as well!  Without this basic knowledge it will be a challenge for them to succeed as they tackle even more difficult and challenging concepts throughout the next several years of their education.  In Social Studies, we will talk a bit more about services in our community and different areas of our government before we take a closer look at the upcoming election.  Cursive is coming right along and as soon as we finish with all upper case letters, students will be starting to write some things in cursive.  Any extra practice at home would be greatly appreciated!  They are doing a fantastic job but will only get better with more experiences with reading and writing cursive!

This week we will be continuing our study of “Hand-Me-Down Tales From Around the World”.  This week’s discoveries will include African, European, Asian, and South American Folktales.  We will be taking a closer look at elements of a folktale and discuss author’s purpose in a bit more detail.  We will also be working on writing narratives in which they can recount an important event in great detail and come up with an appropriate introductory sentence as well as closure for the assigned story.  We will also discuss the purpose of these “hand-me-down” type of stories.  During our Math time, we will be moving on with our discussion of shapes which will allow us to look more closely at  3-D shapes, congruent shapes, and lines of symmetry.  As we continue with our look at the topic of producers and consumers, we will also turn our attention to learning more about the many valuable Natural resources that our Earth provides for us during our Social Studies time.  We will also focus our attention on the proper use of apostrophes in words such as contractions and possessive nouns.  There is so much to cover in just four days of school!
