Week of December 4th-8th

Curriculum News

During the upcoming week, we will continue to take a closer look at the classic story of Charlotte’s Web.  We are trying to help students see the importance of “building bridges” among unlikely friends which ultimately results in a more in depth discussion of what it takes to be a friend and how to build stronger friendships in spite of our differences.  This book is an excellent way to wrap up our unit on “Building Bridges” while also giving them an great opportunity to enjoy a heart-warming tale about the importance of friendship.  During our writing time we will work a bit more with verbs…..especially irregular verbs as well as subject and verb agreement in sentences.  There is always so much to learn and review to help enhance some already blossoming writing skills!

In Math, we will be starting on a rather challenging skill- 2-digit subtraction.  At first we will just work on the basics without regrouping but will soon be moving onto the complicated process of regrouping for subtraction!

We are moving right along with our study of the 7 continents!  It seems that students are really enjoying this unit.  This next week will allow us the time to take a closer look at the vast African continent.  Our focus will be on the country of South Africa but will also allow for students to get a better understanding and hopefully gain some respect for this continent which is filled with so many amazing places and exotic animals!

Information for the Weeks of November 20th-December 1st

Curriculum News

This week’s newsletter will actually cover the weeks of November 20th-21st as well as November 27th-December 1st.  There would be little to report on our very short week before our Thanksgiving break.  During those 2 days we will be busy with numerous activities and learning opportunities that revolve around the topic of Thanksgiving.  While there is NOT a spelling test that very short week, we will be practicing some Thanksgiving words during our “Word Work” time and will also be looking at several stories that will get students prepared and excited for this very special holiday.  We will also skip our Reading Logs for the Thanksgiving holiday.  We want everyone to enjoy their families during this time!

After Thanksgiving we will resume a regular schedule and kick things off with a closer look at the novel-Charlotte’s Web during our Reading/Literacy Block time.  This will tie in nicely with our study of bridges because this book does an excellent job of showing how we can “build bridges among unlikely friends”, which is the theme for our Reading unit for the next couple of weeks.  In Math, we will be working with various types of graphs which will help students better understand how to display important information and how to use graphs to answer a variety of questions.  Our study of the 7 continents will continue as we explore the vast continent of Asia and take a closer look at the fascinating country of China.  Students are doing very well with their map assignments and are enjoying the opportunity to take a look at a variety of cultures from around the world!

Week of November 13th-17th

Curriculum News

During our first week of exploring the many different kinds of bridges, we have hopefully gained a new perspective on bridges and their importance in our lives.  This next week will give us the opportunity to look in greater detail at how the three main types of bridges are built and look at several examples from around the world.  This study of bridges will allow us to continue further with this topic as we look at stories that surround some of the world’s most famous bridges.  With that in mind, students have received another small research project in which they are asked to find some interesting information about a particular famous bridge.  This was sent home on Wednesday of this past week and is not due until November 20th, when they will share their findings with the whole class!  I look forward to seeing some more amazing work from these students!

As we continue to explore the 7 continents, we will get the opportunity to learn about the fascinating continent of Europe.  During our study of Europe, we will turn our attention to the amazing country of Italy and learn a bit more about its history and culture.  Students always enjoy getting the opportunity to learn about different places found around the globe!

Another exciting bit of information for this upcoming week is that students will be starting to learn some of the lower case letters in cursive!  Students are always excited to learn this skill!  It will take a lot of time and practice to cover all of the lower and upper case letters, but I am sure that they will do very well with this very important skill!!!

Curriculum News

While our time exploring the Wild West has come to an end, we will use our Reading/Literacy Block time to explore another very fascinating subject.  We will be spending several weeks exploring bridges.  Over time, we will even explore the idea of “Building Bridges With Unlikely Friends” as we take a look at stories that encourage new and creative ways to build friendships.  During our first week on this topic, we will be taking a closer look at the 3 main types of bridges and learn about some of the world’s most popular and beautiful bridges!  During our Writing/Grammar time we will be taking a look at verb tense and the correct use of verbs in our own sentences and stories that are written.

As we continue to explore the 7 continents, we will get the opportunity to learn about the South American continent and many of its amazing features.  We will also be learning a bit about the lush and beautiful country of Brazil.  Students will enjoy this as we will also get to learn a bit more about the world’s largest rainforest-the Amazon Rainforest.   Our Science time will be spent exploring the Polar habitat.  While this may seem like an empty and desolate place, students will be surprised by the number of living things that call this place home!
