Final Week Info

Curriculum News

With this being our final week of school for the 2015-2016 school year, we will be spending a majority of our time wrapping up some of our units and taking part in some fun end of year activities.  I honestly do not know where the time has gone!  This week during reading we will be spending time reviewing some of the skills that have been covered and even sharing some of our favorite books with one another.  If your child has an absolute favorite from home they can bring it to read to the class….just make sure it is a shorter story so that everyone might have the opportunity to share throughout the week.  During Math we will be talking a bit about arrays and getting them ready for multiplication which will be covered in third grade.  We will also keep working on our cursive.  I encourage students to spend some time over the summer working on their cursive skills as some of their work will need to be written in cursive as they continue their education in our district.  Besides that, we plan on getting things organized and cleaned out so that we can take part in some fun end of year activities.

No Spelling Words!!!–  During our “Word Work” time we will be taking a look at some vocabulary words but there will be no spelling test during our final week!

Announcements/Reminders

There will be 2:00 dismissals on both Thursday and Friday of next week because of final exams which are taking place at the high school.  Over those two days we will be cleaning out desks and sending home school supplies so please make sure that students have book bags and perhaps an extra plastic bag to get supplies back home.  Also, there will be an afternoon of fun on Thursday, May 19th when we will be taking part in our annual “Field Day” festivities.  The rain day will be Friday the 20th, if necessary.  Please remind your child to wear comfortable clothes and tennis shoes as we will be outside most of the afternoon!

*I just want to personally thank each and every one of you for giving me the opportunity to work with your child this school year!  Your encouragement and involvement has helped make this year a lot of fun and a huge success!  While I really do not want to let this group go, they are definitely ready to move on to bigger and better things!

Week of May 9th-13th

Curriculum News

This week, during our literacy block, we will be taking a closer look at the various types of genres for books.  Students will look closely at an example of each type which may end up taking 2 weeks as our schedule gets busier and busier.  Hopefully students will have a better idea of what types of genres they are most drawn to and allow them to at least get some exposure to some that they might otherwise avoid.  We will be spending some time reviewing some of the key math concepts which have been covered this school year as we approach the final two weeks of school.  We will review fractions as well as regrouping when it comes to both addition and subtraction of larger, 3-digit numbers.  Students are also continuing to work on creating their final draft for their concept books.  Our afternoons will also be spent focusing on some key writing skills that will help them be better prepared for third grade and beyond!  There is still so much to be covered!

Spelling Words

This week’s words are below:

thankful    cheerful     hopeful     grateful     thoughtful    useful      forgetful      painful

careful     connect        text      meaning       joyful       helpful        self        world

Announcements/Reminders

Our whole school field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th.  We will be visiting the Peoria Zoo and will get the opportunity to partake in a “Behind the Scenes” tour that most do not get the chance to see!  We will also be visiting the Botanical Gardens where students will learn a bit more about the beautiful plant life that can be found here in the Midwest!  Please be sure to let the school know if your child is eating a school sack lunch (for the usual lunch fee) or if they are bringing their own sack lunch.  Students should bring their lunches in a sack with their name written on it.  They will be kept in coolers throughout the day.  Also, we will be outside rain or shine!  We will definitely hope for “sunshine” but please listen to the forecast and send rain ponchos or umbrellas if needed!  Thank you for your cooperation in advance!

*I also want to personally thank you and your children for the kind notes that were written to me for Teacher Appreciation Week!  Your children are the reason that I teach and these personal notes mean the world to me!  Thank you so much for helping to make this school year so much fun!
