Week of August 29th-September 2nd

Curriculum News & Information

Welcome back to school!  With our first full week under our belt, we are now off and running within a brand new school year!  It is always an exciting time of year.  By now, hopefully students feel more at ease about being upstairs with me and are ready to settle in to what will be a fantastic school year!

Thus far, we have mostly been going over and getting used to our new routines.  We have started to get into the first three areas of our Daily 5 / Literacy Block time.  Students are better understanding what my expectations are and how things run in 2nd grade.  We have also spent some time learning a bit about the fascinating and beautiful ocean habitat.  We will be spending quite a bit of time on this at the beginning of the school year and at times throughout the year.   In math we have been starting back at the basics.  We have been discussing some basic addition strategies.  We will be starting with some Timed Addition Tests very soon.  Students will get 2 minutes to complete 40 problems.  They will pass the level that they are on if they miss 2 or less.  Judging by what I am hearing from them, they will do fantastic with this!  We have also discussed 3 important parts of the brain and what they do for us.  This allows us to better understand why it is important to work on calming ourselves down and trying to always be positive.  We just began starting our day with circle time in which we take a few deep breaths and talk about what we are happy and excited about today!  It is wonderful to see students beginning their day with a big smile on their faces!

This next week will mark the beginning of our spelling tests.  They will be given on Friday.  I will post them to this website on the Friday before so that you can have extra time to study.  Students will also get a hard copy of the words on the Monday of that same week.  There will be two challenge words each week.  If they miss them it will not count against them.  However, if they get them correct it will add some “extra credit” points to their score!  We will practice these words in class each week and there will be at least one other worksheet given each week!  Below are this week’s spelling words!

There will still be 2:00 dismissals each day this next week.  Following that we will be getting into our normal schedule!  Welcome back everyone!

Welcome Back

Back to School

It is already upon us….another school year is set to begin and we are ready to get excited about learning!  Our school theme this year is the ocean, which ties in perfectly with our classroom theme as well.  There is always so much to cover throughout the school year but we will be easing into our routine this week as we do some fun activities to introduce students to our theme and introduce them to what should be expected of them in 2nd grade!  This blog is where you will always find the upcoming week’s spelling words and other hints of what will be coming up in the next week of school.  This is also a way for us to keep in communication and where you can send me questions as I do get emails when posts are made.  Feel free to reach me this way, via email, or at school at any time!  My school email address is ajohnson@hartem.org.

I look forward to a fantastic school year which will be filled with several fun activities and a lot of learning!  There will be no spelling test the first week of school! Instead, we will be looking at and practicing a list of words that tie in with our classroom theme of the ocean!  Welcome back to school everyone!
