Week of November 7th-11th

Curriculum News & Information

There is still so much material to cover as we continue our exploration of the “Wild West”.   This next week we will get the opportunity to study some of the great poets who have written poems about this time in America’s history and will also take a look at few of the popular songs written during this time period.  Our writing time will be spent discussing interviews and how they are completed and written up.  Students will be coming home with a sheet which will give them an opportunity to hopefully find out a bit more about some of their grandparents.  This should be coming home mid-week.  We will also spend some of our writing time exploring writing better sentences as we prepare to write our own short stories in 2nd grade.  During our Math time we will be starting our unit on telling time.  This is such an important and necessary skill that I will ask for you to help sneak in some extra practice at home whenever possible.  This should be starting by the end of the week!  In Science we will be taking a look at how animals help plants survive and discuss several examples of some food chains found in our environment.

While we did not get the opportunity to work on cursive this past week, we will be diving into our cursive books this next week.  We will start with some of the lower case letters before moving on to upper case.  I know that the students will look forward to that and I am anticipating some excellent cursive writers in this class!

Reminders

This next week will also be quite busy.  We will be having a Veteran’s Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 9th in the Emden Gym at 1:00 PM.  The third and fifth grade students have been preparing for this for some time and it is always the perfect way to honor those brave men and women who have served!  There is also no school on Friday, November 11th in honor of Veteran’s Day!

Have a great weekend!

Mrs. Johnson
