Week of Sept. 8th-12th

Starting next week, we will begin our addition timed tests.  Students will be given 40 easy addition problems and will need to get all but 2 correct to pass on to the next level.  They will be given 1 minute and 40 seconds to complete this task.  I do know that this does get stressful for the students but we must get to the point to where we know our math facts without the use of fingers before moving onto third grade!  They can do it!

Also, in reading we will continue to look at several more selections from Cynthia Rylant as we begin our exploration of the 4 Seasons.  Our fall benchmark testing will also be taking place throughout the next two weeks.  This is just a good way to see where our 2nd graders are and what exactly it is that needs to be worked on.

With the weather starting to cool off, hopefully we will be able to get settled into our normal school routine!!

Below are this week’s spelling words:

little          work       know      place      years      rain       mail         wait        paint       chant       paid       history         goods       services       pitch       volume

Week of Sept. 2nd-5th

Also, next week we will be exploring simple story problems in math.  Science will give us the opportunity to discuss what exactly an oceanographer does.  During our Reading/ Daily 5 time, we will be taking part in an author study and will get the opportunity to explore a variety of books written by Cynthia Rylant!  It will definitely be an exciting week!

Student Planners

Today is the day we give the planners a try!  We will be filling them out, even though they do not have homework.  Please sign in the “School Home Chat” box across from each day of the week.  I have been telling them that it is their job/responsibility to get this signed each night (except for Fridays), even if there is no homework!  If you have a quick question for me you can also write a short note inside of that box that I will look at each morning!  Thank you!

Week Of August 25th-29th

Next week will be our first full week of school!  The first few days went very well!  I can already see some amazing things from this 2nd grade class!  It will be so exciting to see them as they grow throughout the school year!

This next week we will be getting into all 5 areas of the Daily 5 and starting to explore the Ocean even more as we take a close look at all levels of this vast part of our earth.  Because of this, our first week of spelling words will be about the ocean.

Here are our words:

ocean     wave    surface    water    dolphin     whale     shark     current     lobster     fish    coral     shell      beach        tide

Thank You

It was wonderful meeting many of the second grade parents last night!  Thank you for attending our Open House/ Meet the Teacher Night!  Students were able to get into the classroom and catch up with some of their classmates and teachers.  One thing that I forgot to give everyone was my email.  This is something that I check frequently throughout the day if I am in the district that day.  Feel free to call the school or reach me at : ajohnson@hartem.org.

Here’s to another fantastic school year!!  Can’t wait to have a classroom full of students!

Daily 5

We will be using the same literacy program as last year-the Daily 5.  You can access a page below that gives you a bit more information regarding this program.  As you will hear me say throughout the school year, feel free to send me any questions or give me a call with any concerns.  Thank you!

Welcome to a brand new school year!

I am so looking forward to working with everyone throughout this school year!  We have so many exciting things to learn and interesting topics to explore that I am anxious to start!  This blog site will allow us to keep in contact and will allow me to keep everyone informed of important announcements and up to date with current skills that we are covering from week to week!

This will be a learning process for me too, so please be patient!

Aloha everyone and I cannot wait to see everyone soon!
