Week of Dec.1st-5th

Curriculum

Yes, the past few weeks have been quite busy but the next three weeks will be even more jam packed full of fun and educational activities!  We will be continuing our introduction of lower case cursive letters.  Students are extremely anxious to get started writing in cursive but must first learn the fundamentals of this new style of handwriting.  Reading will give us the opportunity to examine the science behind bridges as we explore the history and basics of some of the world’s most famous bridges.  Our topic for the next several weeks is “Building Bridges”!During our Social Studies time, we will be exploring the Seven Continents and learn a little about their culture and way of life.

Other Announcements

We will not be doing Show & Tell during the month of December.  Second grade has been struggling a bit with listening skills and had problems staying quiet and focused while their peers were sharing with the class their special things.  After several reminders and warnings, I had to take that privilege away for 1 month to help them remember the importance of showing respect to those who are talking.  Also pertaining to show & tells, I am asking that each student bring no more than 2 items in once it resumes in January.  We have had several students bringing in 6-8 things which is not allowing us to learn as much as we can about these special things that are being shared with us.  Thank you for your help and support!

Book orders will be sent home today.  These will be due by next Friday, December 5th!

Hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Thanksgiving Week

Curriculum

With such a short upcoming week of school, this blog will quite brief.  While we may be short on our list of curriculum topics, we are quite busy with many exciting and fun events.  We have recently started the introductory stage of cursive, meaning that we are talking about some of the basic strokes used when writing cursive letters.  During the week of Thanksgiving we will be learning our first two letters and spend some time practicing them.  Students are always excited about this and it is fun to see their own writing styles develop.  During our reading time we will be continuing to read and discuss the Thanksgiving on Thursday Magic Tree House book.  Students are enjoying the adventures that Jack and Annie are taking us on via their “Magic Tree House”!  We will also spend some time introducing and practicing the very challenging skill of two-digit subtraction!

*No spelling test this week!  We will, however, be practicing some Thanksgiving words during our Word Work time!

Grandparents’ Day

On Wednesday at 8:45 we will be holding a very special event for our Grandparents.  We usually celebrate a “Thanksgiving Feast” with students and staff only but would like to invite our grandparents in for a celebration of both them and this very special holiday.  We will be meeting in the gym and our guests will be treated to a special presentation by our students along with some special time with their grandchildren.  The even should last about 45 minutes to an hour!  Please remind family members of this special day!

Hope that everyone has a very wonderful Thanksgiving!

Week of Nov. 17th-21st

Curriculum

Because of the crazy and rather short week that we had, it appears that we will be playing catch-up this next week to get through a lot of the important things that we missed.  We will continue our exploration of the Wild West by looking at some artists that represented this era with some beautiful works of art.  During our English/ Language Arts time we will be reviewing Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives as well as discuss the use of compound words in our writing.

A majority of the rest of the curriculum will be carried over from last week so check out the posting from last week to see more details about what is to be covered!  Have a great weekend/week everyone!

Week of Nov. 10th-14th

Curriculum

Because of so many special activities over the past couple of weeks, we are a little behind with our Reading Unit so our discussion about the Magic Tree House Book- Ghost Town Before Sundown will continue throughout this upcoming week.  Students are enjoying the opportunity to get a taste of what life might have been like during our country’s “Wild West” days.  During our Language Arts time, we will be reviewing the difference between nouns, verbs, and adjectives as well as work on writing “Super Sentences” that have much more detail in them!  Social Studies will allow us to better understand what natural resources are and why they are so valuable to everyone!  We will be spending a little more time this week practicing the very important skill of adding 2-digit numbers.  This is a necessary skill to have mastered before moving on to more challenging tasks!

Upcoming Events

There is no school on Tuesday, November 11th because of Veteran’s Day!  Because of this very important day, our school is having a very special Veteran’s Day program on Monday, November 10th at 1:00 in the gym.  The 3rd and 5th grade are putting together a program to recognize our Veterans and let them know how appreciative we are for all that they have done.  Everyone is invited to attend!

Week of Nov. 3rd-7th

We have had a very busy week at Emden Elementary!  I will be posting a few pictures of some of the activities very soon, but with Red Ribbon Week and Halloween I am a bit behind.  For that I do apologize!

Curriculum

Next week will also find us trying to play catch up to get in some of the lessons that we did not get to the previous week.  For that reason, some of the skills and material covered will be repeated.  We will be looking at a Magic Tree House Book during our literacy time, however, that gives us the opportunity to continue our exploration of the “Wild West” and the topic of “Ghost Towns”.  During our science time we will continue to look at a variety of classifications of animals.  We will also be working on more 2-digit addition during our math time!

Halloween

Our Halloween parade will be Friday at 1:00 PM.  Following that will be parties in each classroom.  I know that Mandy Cordray posted a request for some help with this party as a response to this week’s activities.  Please see this post for further information!  Thank you for all that you do parents!  We look forward to seeing you on Friday!

We have also been compiling an ocean journal with a lot of valuable information that we have been learning about the ocean habitat.  This will continue along with our exploration of a variety of classification of animals.  Social Studies will lead us into the discussion of  landforms and geographical maps.  There are still so many things to be learned this week!
