Curriculum News

Over the next couple of weeks we will be spending our time getting to know a very famous children’s author named Tomie DePaola.  During our first week we will learn a bit about his background and where he gets some of his ideas for his characters and stories.  Then we will take a look at some of his more popular books that involve a very wise character named Strega Nona.   This will also give us the opportunity to work on some of our own story writing skills that are set in some very unique locations as well.

We have been spending a few extra days reviewing time so starting this week, we will be working with money.  We will start out with some activities that help us review the basics….such as the names of coins and their values.  Then we will move on to more challenging tasks such as adding coins together to come up with a total.

*Starting this next week, we will be welcoming an extra teacher in the second grade classroom.  Mrs. Brianna Eeten will be joining us as she finishes up her student teaching through Western Governers University.  Her placement will be in our classroom for approximately 2 months.  During that time she will be doing some observing but will gradually be taking over teaching responsibilities one subject at a time.  I will always be present in the classroom during this time but we look forward to having her with us in the 2nd grade classroom!

Curriculum News

Students have had the opportunity to get to know a very brave woman named, Harriet Tubman.  This will give us the chance to take a look at several other books that help our students better understand how challenging and dangerous it was for slaves to even attempt the long journey towards freedom.  We will continue to work on a lot of the reading and comprehension skills which we have more recently been taking a look at.  This will include a review of author’s purpose and cause and effect.  Students will need to sharpen this skill as they prepare for more challenging reading adventures.

In Math we will be reviewing the concept of telling time for a few days before moving on to another challenging concept- counting money. These are both life skills which students will need to master so that they are prepared for real life experiences!

During our Social Studies time we will continue to explore our country’s history. This week we will turn our attention to the Civil War.  Students will have a better idea of the many struggles that Americans faced during this time in our country’s history.

In Science we will continue to explore some of the other habitats and biomes that can be found on our amazing planet Earth.  This will lead us into the discussion of how we can do a better job of taking care of our Earth on a daily basis!

Curriculum News

This past week has given us the opportunity to dive fully into our Reading/Literature Unit titled, A Long Journey to Freedom.  By now, students have been able to see how important our 16th president was in helping our country become a strong and united nation.  During the upcoming week we will be talking a bit more about the dark side of our history- the practice of slavery.  As we discuss this, we will be especially taking a closer look at a very brave former slave who managed to escape to freedom while helping many others as well-Harriet Tubman.  We will also be studying the concept of cause and effect as we read to better understand the informational texts which we will explore.

In Math we will be wrapping up our unit on telling time. This will lead us into the brief discussion of understanding schedules, elapsed time, and reading calendars.  All of these skills are things that will be used for the rest of their lives!

During our Social Studies time we will continue to explore our country’s history.  While our morning literacy time will be spent on the topic of slavery and the Underground Railroad, our time in this content area will give us the opportunity to learn a bit more about how our country came to be.  It is always good for students to have an idea of the many struggles that our forefathers went through to help our country develop into what it is today!

Curriculum News

After finally getting a full week “under our belt”, we are finally able to get back into our regular routine and make some progress!

During our Reading/Literacy block we will continue to take a closer look at Abraham Lincoln and that period of time in which he lived.  Students will have a better understanding of all that he had to deal with during that time in our country’s history.  We will look at several different books that take a closer look at his life as a child growing up in Kentucky and Indiana as well his time leading up to his presidency. During our Math time we will be working on telling time to the minute as well as elapsed time.  Keep practicing this skill at home boys and girls!  During our Social Studies time we will also be looking a bit more into our country’s history and will then get a closer look at some of our country’s symbols.

There are a lot of important topics still to explore and learn about!  Keep working hard second grade and remember how important it is to get homework turned in on time!  This will only help you prepare you for the increasing expectations as you move forward in your education!

The 2nd grade Valentine’s Party will be Thursday, the 14th at 1:00 PM.  There are some very gracious parents helping out with this who make it all possible!  We thank you so much for helping to make this day fun and memorable for our students.
