Week of January 8th-11th

Curriculum News

This newsletter will cover the first week of 2019.  I did want to get a few bits of information out to help everyone prepare for our first full week of school for this brand new year!  Hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday and come back well rested and ready for the second half of our school year!  The first half certainly flew by and I am certain that the second half will also go very quickly!

During our Reading/Literacy block we will be taking a closer look at a Magic Tree House adventure titled, Blizzard of the Blue Moon.  This will allow us to work on some writing and comprehension skills as we also enjoy the many joys (and sometimes headaches) of winter.  We will be reviewing 2-digit subtraction for a few days before we move on to working with 3-D shapes.  Please continue to work on memorizing those addition facts as we need to move on with subtraction facts very soon!

There are several other skills and topics to be covered this week, but we will also be getting ready for our Winter benchmark tests which will be coming up soon!

Week of December 17th- 21st

Curriculum News & Information

This next week we will be spending most of our Reading/Literacy time focusing on some fun Christmas stories.  This will give us a chance to discuss things such as special holiday traditions and memories.  We will also be taking a look at the traditional story of the Christmas Carol, using the Mickey Mouse version so that students might enjoy it a bit more.  This will give us the opportunity to discuss the importance of thinking of others during the holiday season.

For math, we will be reviewing some of the concepts covered previously throughout the first semester as well as working on some math Christmas activities. In the afternoon, we will be working on things such as cursive, weather, and more maps.  There will also be several special activities scheduled as we get closer to the end of the week!

* There will be no Spelling Test in second grade until the week of January 8th-11th!  Instead we will be practicing some words that go along with the special holidays which we are celebrating at this time of year!  I am also giving students a break from their Reading Logs over Christmas Break.  Show & Tells will resume in the month of February!

Week of December 10th-14th

Curriculum News & Information

During our last two weeks of the semester, we will spend some time taking a look at some of our favorite Christmas stories.  We will especially be discussing ones that focus on kindness and compassion during this holiday season.  This ties in nicely with our recent discussion about building bridges between people and how to build strong relationships.  Our writing time will be spent focusing on personal narratives about some of our Christmas traditions as well as other skills that will only build upon our current writing skills.  We will also be taking a look at synonyms and antonyms which will help give students insight on how to use more vivid words in their daily writing.

As we wrap up our study of the 7 Continents, we will be exploring the little known continent of Antarctica.   Students will learn a bit about the continent that very few people have  visited.  In Science we will continue our exploration of a variety of habitats.  In Math, we will be spending some more time working with subtracting 2-digit numbers as we continue to practice those very important addition and subtraction facts.
