Week of April 24th-28th

Curriculum News & Information

For our first week back, we continued taking a look at another book in the Mercy Watson Series, which is a fun character to use to study a variety of reading skills such as point of view and main idea.    This next week we will be looking at a number of books written by the children’s author Jacqueline Woodson.  We will also be doing some vocabulary work with some of the words from these stories during our Reading & Writing time.

During Math we will be doing a little more practice with 3 digit subtraction, as this is always a challenge to remember but is a skill that will be necessary to have mastered before moving on and throughout their daily lives.  We will continue to explore the seasons in science as they tie in nicely to our study of our solar system.  In Social Studies we will continue to hone our map skills as we take a closer look at a variety of maps!

Students are starting to get a bad case of “Spring Fever” right now….which I do understand.  While this is quite common this time of year, we still need to remember that we have about 5 weeks of school left and there is still so much to learn before moving on to third grade!

Weeks of April 10th-12th & 18th-21st

Curriculum News & Information

During our Reading/Literacy block, we will be taking a look at a popular series of books called Mercy Watson by Kate DiCamillo.  These stories are quite humorous and entertaining but will also allow us to work on story maps and compare characters within this particular series of books.  After Easter break, we will be looking at a number of books written by the children’s author Jacqueline Woodson.  We will also be doing some vocabulary work with some of the words from these stories during our Reading & Writing time.  Students will also get the opportunity to write a bit about their favorite Easter and spring-time traditions.  There are so many fun things to explore at this time of the year!

During Math we will be working on adding 3-digit numbers with regrouping (carrying).  Students seem to have forgotten the procedures for adding 2-digit numbers and this will allow us to review and build upon that skill some more!

There is no spelling test during the shortened week of April 10th-12th.  The list of words that are found below are for the week of April 18th-21st.

Spelling:    painter    washer    dryer    flyer    server   worker   singer   teacher   speaker

thinker      sailor     author

Challenge Words:        elevator      inventor
